Protocol Labs Launches Web3.Storage, a Simple Interface for Developers to Utilize the Full Potential of Web3 Technology
New interface will simplify developer experience of storing data on the Filecoin network, while providing the content addressability and immutability of IPFS
San Francisco, California – 3 August, 2021 – Protocol Labs, an open-source R&D lab that builds protocols, tools, and services to radically improve the internet including Filecoin and IPFS, today announces the launch of Web3.Storage. Web3.Storage enables developers to build on top of powerful decentralized storage protocols to facilitate the next generation of open applications.
Web3.Storage enables developers to store content on the Filecoin network for free and for the long-term. Developers can use a very simple library to interact with Web3.Storage and get all the benefits of Filecoin’s decentralized storage service. By using Web3.Storage, developers can build applications that are resilient to any individual service provider going offline.
All data stored through Web3.Storage is accessible via the IPFS network, allowing anyone to access this data using open and public infrastructure. As all content in the IPFS network is referenced via immutable links by default, developers can build highly resilient applications protected against any concerns of malicious data manipulation.
Commenting on the launch, Jonathan Victor, Product Manager and Business Development at Protocol Labs, said, “Establishing a new frontier for the Web3 movement, Filecoin storage providers recently surpassed 8 Billion gigabytes of capacity on the network. To keep pace with the astronomical growth of the datasphere and facilitate decentralized web innovation, enhancing the UX for developers is paramount. Web3.Storage is the easiest way to store data on the decentralized web using stylistic APIs that are approachable even to new developers in Web3 space. There is such a vibrant, growing community of developers interested in building their projects on Web3 technology and Web3.Storage aims to make these powerful protocols accessible to all developers regardless of prior experience. The launch of the Web3.Storage intuitive interface means more developers than ever will be empowered to build Web3 solutions and harness the full potential of IPFS and Filecoin.”

Filecoin, the world’s largest decentralized storage network, allows users to store, request, and transfer data via a verifiable marketplace. Filecoin is completely open-source, enabling people from all over the world to participate. The Filecoin protocol runs on an advanced and novel proof system — a combination of Proof of Spacetime (PoSt) and Proof of Replication (PoRep), to provide unmatched efficiency and reliability.
IPFS is a peer-to-peer network and protocol designed to make the web faster, safer, and more open. IPFS upgrades the web to work peer to peer, addressing data by what it is instead of where it’s located on the network, or who is hosting it.
